The Former Residence of Sun Yat-sen,
at No.7 Xiangshan Road, Shanghai, which is a two-storey European-style
building. Sun Yat-sen (1866-1925) was the great pioneer of the Chinese
democratic revolution, the founder of the Republic of China. From
1918 to 1925, he and his wife, Mrs. Song Qingling lived here. It
was here that Mr. Sun accomplished his renowned masterpieces such
as Doctrines of Sun Wen, Plans of China's Development, etc. He reformed
the Nationalist Party, advocated People’s Three Principles (Nationalism,
Democracy and the People's Livelihood) and put forward the three
cardinal policies (alliance with Soviet Russia, cooperation with
the Communists and assistance to the workers and peasants). It was
also here that he received the representatives of the Communist
Party of China and Russia thus caused the first cooperation between
the two major parties in Chinese modern history.
On March 4, 1961, the Former Residence of Sun Yat-sen was designated
by the State Council as one of China's first major government-protected
cultural sites.
Most of the exhibits displayed in the residence are original and
arranged as they were in the 1920s and 1930s according to Song Qingling's
recollections. The sitting room and the dining room are on the ground
floor. Upstairs are the study, the bedroom and a small sitting room.
Attached to this building is a two-storey outbuilding originally
designed as a garage. In front of the residence is a beautiful garden.
The Former Residence of Sun Yat-sen is a very good place for people
to commemorate the achievements of this great man.
